Frequently asked questions

The basics of getting paid from abroad as an Indian freelancer or exporter.

How does this site rank international payment platforms?

Platforms are ranked by the INR that reaches your Indian bank account. Each payout takes the invoice amount, subtracts the platform fee, converts the rest at the European Central Bank reference rate minus the platform's FX markup, and deducts 18% GST on fees where charged. Platforms without full published pricing are listed but not ranked.

What is the mid-market rate?

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between the buying and selling price of a currency, before any provider adds a margin. It is the fairest benchmark for comparing conversions. This site uses the European Central Bank's daily reference rate and shows every platform's payout against it.

What is a FIRA and why do exporters need one?

A FIRA (Foreign Inward Remittance Advice) is a document confirming that foreign currency reached India through banking channels. Service exporters use it as proof of export for GST refunds, export benefits and income tax records. Check whether a platform issues a FIRA for every payment, and whether it charges for it.

Do Indian freelancers pay GST on export of services?

Export of services is zero-rated under GST. A registered exporter can file a Letter of Undertaking (LUT) on the GST portal and export without paying IGST. Freelancers below the GST registration threshold usually do not need to register. Confirm your own position with a chartered accountant.

What does RBI PA-CB authorisation mean?

PA-CB stands for Payment Aggregator Cross Border. RBI authorises companies under this framework to process cross-border payments for Indian businesses. An authorised platform is regulated by RBI for these payments. Check RBI's published list before relying on a platform's claim.

Why does the cheapest platform change with invoice size?

Platforms price in different ways. A flat fee per payment is a large share of a small invoice and a small share of a large one, while a percentage fee grows with the invoice. So a platform that costs least on $500 can cost more on $10,000. Use the ranking for your own invoice size.
